What Are the Laws of Attraction?

The laws of attraction have appeared on countless television shows and in numerous written publications. Despite the fact that we're all familiar with the law of attraction Abraham teachings and The Secret, many of us are foggy when it comes to what the actual universally accepted laws are. That's because these laws are reinterpreted with every author who adapts the sayings and ideas into his or her own style. Since there are so many writers capitalizing on this same idea, there has been much criticism for new law of attraction books and movies.

There are all different laws of attraction, depending on which author you're reading. According to Jerry and Esther Hicks, the Abraham law of attraction has 12 main principles. You are a physical extension of that which is non-physical. You are here in this body because you chose to be here. The basis of your life is freedom/the purpose of your life is joy. You are a creator/you create with your every thought. Anything that you can imagine is yours to be or do or have. As you are choosing your thoughts, your emotions are guiding you. The universe adores you for it knows your broadest intentions. Relax into your natural well-being/all is well. You are a creator of thought-ways on your unique path of joy. Actions to be taken and possessions to be exchanged are byproducts of your focus on joy. You may appropriately depart your body without illness or pain. You cannot die/you are everlasting life.

Some say the original laws of attraction dealt with real, concrete science; not the pseudo-science we see today. As early as 390 BC, Plato was quoted as saying, "Likes tends toward likes," meaning that like forces attract. In 1250, Albertus Magnus took this idea one step further when discussing chemical relationships by saying, "Like elements attract like elements; all things have primary qualities, but are able to acquire secondary or tertiary qualities by association; qualities may inherently belong to an entire species or just to an individual object; objects repel those with opposite qualities." People began to apply the law of attraction to human relationships and the mind in the late 19th century, as the New Thought movement took off.

One of the most influential writings about the laws of attraction comes from Wallace D. Wattles, who published The Science of Getting Rich in 1906. "You must know what you want, and be definite. You can never get rich, or start the creative power into action, by sending out unformed longings and vague desires," he writes in his book. Secondly, "The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best; therefore it tends to become the best; it takes the form or character of the best, and will receive the best." Thirdly, "Do not sit down and try to attract the thing you want to you; but begin to move toward the thing you want, and you will find it coming to meet you. Action and reaction are equal; and the person who steadily and purposefully moves forward with one thing in view becomes a center toward which the thing he seeks is drawn with irresistible power." To attract everything you desire, you must use thought as a creative power and impelling force to bring riches and happiness your way, he argues.
